Fehu means cattle: the oldest movable wealth there is. Not land and not a vault — something that has to be fed, moved and eventually shared. The rune carries that condition with it wherever it goes.

What is documented, what is attributed, what is ours
Documented origin
ᚠ is the first rune of the Elder Futhark, the runic alphabet used across Germanic-speaking Europe from roughly the second to the eighth century. Its name means "cattle", and by extension movable property.

Traditional reading
Three rune poems — Old English, Old Norwegian and Old Icelandic, all written down centuries after the alphabet was in everyday use — gloss the rune as wealth. The Old English poem adds a condition: it is a comfort to everyone, but a person must share it freely. Wealth appears there as an obligation as much as a possession.

Modern reading
Rune divination as practised today is largely a twentieth-century revival. The historical alphabet was used for writing — names, ownership, memorials — and continuous divinatory use is not attested. We keep the poem’s meaning and leave the fortune-telling out.
