What is documented, what is attributed, what is ours
Documented origin
The number eight carries associations with prosperity in several unrelated places. In Mandarin, 八 (bā) sounds close to 發 (fā), "to prosper", which is why eight recurs in Chinese dates, addresses and phone numbers. Repetition intensifies the association — a common pattern in numeral symbolism.

Traditional reading
Separately, in early Christian gematria the Greek letters of Ἰησοῦς were read as summing to 888. The two traditions share a number and nothing else. We keep them apart rather than merging them into a single story.

Modern reading
Reading repeated digits as a prompt — the "angel number" practice — is modern, popularised from the 1990s onward. It is an interpretive layer added recently, not an inherited one.
